Are You Washing Your Face Properly?

The foundation of your skincare routine starts with washing your face. If your skin isn’t clean, applying serums and other products with active ingredients becomes useless. The active ingredients are unable to penetrate your skin, thus causing it to lose effectiveness. Proper cleansing ensures that any additional skincare products you apply are absorbed and can work their magic, making it a crucial step in any skincare routine.

At night

Step #1: Use makeup remover

At night, you should use cleansing milk, our two-phase makeup removal emulsion or micellar water to remove makeup. This step is important for everyone, even if you don’t wear makeup.

Makeup, smog, dirt and other impurities build up on your face over the course of the day so cleansing is especially important at night. By the end of the day, your face is covered with a layer of grime made up of impurities that are only lipid-soluble or dissolvable in oil. Makeup remover can remove these impurities that a regular cleanser can’t, thus making it an important step before cleansing.

Step #2: Use cleanser

Are you only cleansing with water? Using water as your cleanser will dry out your skin, weakening its protective barrier. Over time, it causes your skin to become dry which can also make you oily since your skin will produce more oil to compensate for the dryness. Your skin will also become redder and more uneven.

We recommend using a water-based cleanser such as our Marine Algae Foam Cleanser to remove makeup remover residue and water-soluble impurities such as sweat. Rinse your face with lukewarm water which is better than hot or cold water at getting rid of oil.

Step #3: Use toner

The last step before applying serums and creams is to use a tonic or toner. In addition to removing water-soluble impurities from your skin, toner helps remove any leftover cleanser while moisturizing and refreshing the skin.

Step #4: Apply the rest of your products

Now that your skin is properly cleansed, it will better absorb your other skincare products. You can include products that target specific problems such as enlarged pores, hyperpigmentation, or dry skin. Your skin naturally regenerates at night and we recommend applying a serum at night to boost the regeneration process (e.g. Argan Oil, Intensive Skincare, or our Aknestop line). Serums and targeted products should be applied before topping off with a nourishing moisturizing cream.

In the morning

In the morning, you can simplify your routine by using a toner to wipe away sweat and other impurities before applying the rest of your daytime products or you can use cleanser and toner before following up with the rest of your daytime routine products. Don’t forget to apply a moisturizing cream with SPF to protect your skin against UV rays, smog, dust and the weather! Remember that skincare routines are personal and should be tailored to suit your needs.
